Enraged England fans have hilariously tweaked the Wikipedia page of Walton Sampaio, the referee who took charge of the Three Lions’ World Cup quarter-final defeat to France on Saturday evening to portray him as biased.

Wilton Sampaio enraged English supporters with a series of questionable decisions throughout the quarter-final.

The Brazilian official handed England two penalties – albeit with the help of VAR, after waving off the second shout – but left Gareth Southgate’s side feeling aggrieved by ignoring what they felt were fouls.

Fans and players were especially angered after a rough challenge on Bukayo Saka, where Dayot Upamecano didn’t touch the ball, led to France’s opener.

Saka was brought down several times throughout the high-stake encounter, but Wilton Sampaio wasn’t fazed by the cries of thousands for a decision to go their way.

Harry Kane was also brought down on the edge of the area with what looked like a certain foul, only for Sampaio to tell the Three Lions captain to get up.

Fans were quick to showcase their anger by altering his Wikipedia description, writing: “Wilton Pereira Sampaio (born 28 December 1981) in Teresina de Goias, Goias, Brazil) is a French fan and Brazilian football referee. He was recently offered sexual favours by [Kylian] Mbappe for favourable decisions to France.”

Comments on Twitter weren’t as polite, however, with one England fan declaring: “England didn’t play brilliant, but they played better than France. I can accept us losing, if the lads gave everything, which they did. However, what I won’t accept is being cheated out of the win by poor bias officials (ref.)”

Another wrote: “Harry Kane you did us proud. It was a great game to watch. The ref should be disciplined for ignoring all those fouls against England. Does the world hate England so much? France may have still won, dirty play should be outlawed. I thought the saying was cheats don’t prosper.”

A third added: “That was a game of football spoilt simply by the ref not doing his job. He should have carded the first cynical blatant foul and then red carded. The French team set out to pressurize and cheat, the ref allowed them to do so.”

And a fourth said: “I have no grudges against Harry Kane for missing that 2nd penalty. It happens to the best of them. We were cheated out of that game by a poor bias ref and a bias cheat, who was running the VAR.”
