Graham Potter's Chelsea 'Worst Blues Team In 10 Years' - Cascarino

Graham Potter’s Chelsea team is the worst the club has seen in 10 years, claims former Blues striker Tony Cascarino.

Chelsea hasn’t won any of their last five Premier League matches and Cascarino says his concern about Potter’s pragmatic approach has come true.

Newcastle was the latest team to come out on top over the west Londoners. Eddie Howe’s side won 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday to condemn the Blues to their third successive league defeat.

It is the first time since 2015 that Chelsea has suffered that run of form. Cascarino says he had reservations over Potter’s appointment due to the lack of goals his Brighton teams would score.

And he says that has proven to be the same at Chelsea. He told talkSPORT: “They’ve lost their way slightly. They don’t look like scoring goals in the center-forward position, but I can’t believe how many players are playing so poorly for Chelsea.

“That is what’s really surprising. What I’m watching now is probably the worst Chelsea team that they’ve had over the last 10 years because I really don’t know what they’re about.

“My one reservation when Graham Potter got the job was that he’s basically a pragmatic manager but never really had center-forwards. I know he had [Neal] Maupay and [Danny] Welbeck, but they weren’t prolific for him.

“No one looks like scoring on a regular basis. Let’s take the last three Premier League games.

“Your center-forward against Brighton was [Kai] Havertz and they lost 4-1. The center-forward against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge was [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and they lost 1-0. Against Newcastle, it was [Armando] Broja.

“So in the last three Premier League games, they’ve had a different striker so that rings alarm bells immediately. That is a real problem to have as a manager.”

Chelsea have to wait until December 27 before they can attempt to put their bad form behind them. And Potter admits it has been a difficult few weeks in charge.

He said: “It’s been tough. We’re not in a great moment. We have to lick our wounds. We have a break now so we have to refocus, re-energize and hopefully get some players back. It’s been an incredibly intense period.

“You have to accept the struggles you’ve had and then move forward. It’s a change of scenery, a change of focus and when everyone comes back we can start again.”
