What Sergio Aguerogives assessment of Gabriel Jesus

Manchester City icon, Sergio Aguero has given his honest assessment of his former teammate Gabriel Jesus after his stellar start to life at Arsenal.

The Brazilian appears to be thriving now he is out of the shadow of Aguero like he was at City, where he failed to ever truly dislodge the Argentine as a first-choice striker for a sustained period of time.

That’s not to suggest there is any ill feeling between the two. In fact, Aguero has heaped praise on his old colleague.

The 25-year-old has scored five goals so far this season, currently making him the club’s top scorer in all competitions. Yet he’s not just a scorer, he’s also a leader and creator, as his five assists prove, but even then, you get the sense that Jesus is only getting started.

Speaking to Stake.com, Aguero said: “Gabriel has always had good respect, he’s truly a complete player. Now, he’s been able to secure a place among the main squad for Arsenal, and his team has many young players with a hunger for glory.

“[Mikel] Arteta has really been able to imbue it with his style. This has all set up Gabriel to be a key piece of the team, and I’m very happy for it.”

Jesus has played a starring role in Arsenal’s fantastic early season form, with the Gunners sitting top of the Premier League table – one point ahead of his old team as Pep Guardiola’s City breathing down their necks.

The atmosphere at the Emirates is currently operating at a noise level it hasn’t reached previously, with morale around the place sky-high as a result of Arsenal’s faultless form.

Sunday’s 3-2 win over Liverpool sent out quite the statement, considering for so long the Gunners have failed to lay a glove on Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Gunners have a Brazilian contingent of three players – all of whom are automatic starters in the eyes of Arteta in Jesus, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Gabriel Martinelli.

Although Arsenal sit top after winning eight of their opening nine league games this season, Aguero is unsure if the Gunners will remain Man City’s only challenges but still expects them to be in and around the title race.

“We’re on the first stage of a Premier League that will be different from many others – by and large because we’ll have a World Cup in the middle of it.

“Consistency is the name of the game to win the title and the missing piece is knowing in what condition each player will rejoin their clubs after the World Cup.

Arsenal will probably be one of those teams but surely not the only one,” Aguero added.
