Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney is reportedly on Everton’s shortlist to replace Frank Lampard as manager.

Everton are having a hatd time in the Premier League and finds themselves 18th on the league table.

And after a previous season that saw them only just escape relegation, time is most certainly ticking on Lampard’s tenure at the helm of the club.

It is now being reported by The Sun, that club legend Wayne Rooney is on owner Farhad Moshiri’s shortlist should they sack the Englishmen’s former teammate.

Rooney previously revealed that he had turned down the chance to interview for the Everton job when Rafael Benitez left the job.

The former striker was at Derby at the time, admitting: “They approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job which I turned down.

“I believe I will be a Premier League manager and that I’m ready for that, and if that’s with Everton in future that would be great.

“It was a very difficult decision but I’ve got a job here at Derby which is important to me.”

Rooney has since left the English club after they spent the entire 2021/22 season in administration.

He was praised for his job at the club despite the circumstances.

He joined MLS side D.C. United as manager following his stint at Derby, another team he spent some time with as a player.

However, after Lampard’s side’s heavy 4-1 loss to Brighton earlier this week, there is certainly a heap of pressure on the Everton side to produce results.

And Rooney may certainly have his second chance to interview for the role.

The Merseyside club have lost eight of their last 11 fixtures in all competitions, and owner Moshiri is getting his shortlist together.

Other potential candidates reportedly include Sean Dyche and former Everton manager Roberto Martinez.

Dyche has been out of the job since being sacked by Burnely in April.

Meanwhile, Martinez only recently left the Belgium job and spent time at Goodison Park between 2013 and 2016.

Rooney’s name on the list shows that there is certainly some interest on Everton’s side in the English icon’s managerial abilities.

Especially considering he had already turned them down in recent times.
