Twitter Reactions As Mbappe, Giroud Fires France To Quarter Finals Of 2022 World Cup

Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe score the goals as France beat Poland 3-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

Didier Deschamps’s side are one step closer to defending their title in Qatar. Mbappe now has a tournament-leading five goals and the 2018 champions are within three wins of defending their title.

No country has repeated as World Cup champions in six decades _ since Brazil achieved the feat by claiming consecutive trophies in 1958 and 1962. Italy is the only other nation to have won two straight, in 1934 and 1938.

France’s quarterfinal opponent will be either England or Senegal.

France might just have to end a 60-year curse at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, don’t they? The defending champions moved one step closer to emulating Italy and Brazil in winning back-to-back titles in the men’s World Cup as they progressed to the quarter-final with a dominant 3-1 win over Poland on Sunday.

At the Al Thumama Stadium, it was all France as Robert Lewandowski’s Poland struggled to keep up with the intensity of Didier Deschamp’s side, who dominated at both ends of the pitch.

Robert Lewandowski scored from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time for Poland.

There were record-breaking feats from old guard Olivier Giroud and young gun Kylian Mbappe as France sent a warning message to the rest of the group in Qatar, firmly reasserting their title credentials.

Below are some of the reactions from fans culled by infoexpert24:

@FabrizioRomano: Kylian Mbappé. 9 World Cup goals in 2 editions. More than legends as Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Suárez, Neymar, Thierry Henry, Rivaldo, Kempes… and more.

Same goals as Lionel Messi — but 3 World Cups less than the Argentinian star. …and still counting. He’s 23.

@janinebeckie: What a game. France with a performance that deservedly keeps them in the tournament, this team is goooood. Thought that was the most dangerous Poland looked at this World Cup, but not enough.

@iamOkon: Mbappe is unstoppable – his pace, the quality of his finishes, ability of assist – he actually has everything in his arsenal. France have got every chance in the world with him on the pitch. He’s makes the difference!

@Brendan_Dunlop: It’s Kylian Mbappé’s world. And we’re just living in it. What a finish!

@OptaJoe: Aged 23 years and 349 days, Kylian Mbappé is the youngest player to reach five knockout stage goals at the World Cup since Pelé in 1958 (17y 249d). Superstar.

@JacobsBen: France into the quarter-finals, spearheaded by an unplayable Mbappe who got two goals and an assist. Shoutout to Giroud, too. He got a key (and record-breaking) opener, a disallowed overhead-kick and has three World Cup goals. Quite the contrast to his 0 shots on target in 2018.

@adriandelmonte: The best player in world football right now. Everyone talking about Ronaldo & Messi cementing their legacy with a World Cup. If Mbappe leads this injury ravaged France squad to glory in Qatar, it will be 2 titles by the age of 23 & legendary status.

@UsherKomugisha: Olivier Giroud is now France’s 🇫🇷 all-time goal-scorer with 52 goals – one more than the legend Thierry Henry. Giroud has been underrated for years. Great to see him achieve this feat especially at the World Cup. Félicitations.
