Piers Morgan has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal, branding their performance against Brighton as “pathetic” and accusing the team of faltering in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners suffered a resounding 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium against Brighton on Sunday, effectively handing the title to Manchester City.

With a four-point lead and a game in hand, Pep Guardiola’s side now only need one victory from their remaining three matches to secure the trophy.

After a goalless first half, Arsenal’s second-half collapse saw them succumb to goals from Julio Enciso, Deniz Undav, and Pervis Estupinian, leaving their fans devastated.

The defeat marked the end of Arsenal’s hopes for their first title since the 2003/04 season.

Morgan expressed his fury after witnessing the game and directed his criticism towards Mikel Arteta and his players.

He took to Twitter, writing: “All over. Totally outplayed by a team that just lost 1-5 to Everton. A horribly lacklustre, passion-devoid, spiritless, pathetic performance that cements an inexplicably dismal run-in to a season which promised so much. Bottom line: we choked. #afc.”

Arsenal’s form has crumbled since early April, as they squandered two-goal leads against Liverpool and West Ham, settling for draws, before being held to a 3-3 draw by bottom-placed Southampton.

These dropped points were compounded by a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Although Arteta’s side responded with victories over Chelsea and Newcastle, they were unable to overcome Brighton. Morgan firmly believes that Arsenal have “bottled” the title race, considering their significant lead over City just six weeks ago.

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey offered a different perspective, tweeting: “I hate this narrative that Arsenal bottled it. They have pushed one of the PL’s greatest ever teams all the way, and done it with a young coach and young players who finished 5th last season. It’s nothing but a success. They fell short, they’ll be stronger for it.”

Morgan responded to Humphrey, stating: “It’s not ‘success’ to be 8pts clear, then fail to win two consecutive games when we were 2-0 up, go 2-0 down in 10 mins at home to the worst team in the League, get humiliated at City, & surrender in a pitiful manner to Brighton at home today. It’s failure, and we bottled it.”

In a discussion with a supporter, Morgan maintained his position: “Very happy to see the massive improvement we’ve made this season, but also very unhappy with the way we choked the League when it was ours for the taking. Any Arsenal fan who says/thinks differently is deluded.”

Arsenal’s next match is against Nottingham Forest this weekend, followed by their final game of the season against Wolves.

Manchester City, having played Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg, can potentially secure the title at home against Chelsea on Sunday.
