Manchester United has been dealt a blow ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash with Newcastle, as goalkeeper Tom Heaton is set to miss several weeks of action with an ankle injury.

Newcastle will be seeking revenge for their loss to United in the Carabao Cup final back in February, where the Red Devils secured their first major trophy in over five years.

Unfortunately for Ten Hag, he will be unable to call upon 36-year-old goalkeeper Heaton for the upcoming match due to his injury.

Although Heaton has mainly been utilized as a backup for United this season, he has demonstrated his ability to perform when called upon.

With the race for a top-four finish heating up, United will be eager to secure a vital three points against Newcastle.

The absence of Heaton will undoubtedly pose a challenge for Ten Hag, but the manager will have to rally his team and make the necessary adjustments to come out on top.

He has kept clean sheets in both appearances he has made under Ten Hag, which came in the Carabao Cup against Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest.

Speaking on his injury, Heaton informed club media that he had rolled his ankle in training, referring to it as a “bit of a random one”.

“Yeah, unfortunately the day before the Fulham game, I rolled my ankle in training,” said Heaton.

“Thankfully, it’s not too bad but it’ll mean a couple of weeks out, I think. I should be back some point in April somewhere, hopefully halfway through.

“It’s an occupational hazard unfortunately, a bit of a random one but, yeah, I just went over on the ankle and nicked the ligament.

“I’m in this [protective boot] for another few days then hope to get it back moving again.”

Jack Butland, who is currently on loan from Crystal Palace, is expected to take up the position of second-choice goalkeeper behind David De Gea at Manchester United.

The move comes as United look to strengthen their squad and improve their chances of success in the upcoming matches.

In a major boost for United supporters, it was reported on Friday that Luke Shaw has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club for an additional four years. This is welcome news for fans who have long admired the left-back’s performances on the pitch.
