Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United has hit a rough patch as several senior players express their discontent with the way the club legend David de Gea‘s departure was handled.

De Gea, after 12 years of unwavering service to the club bid farewell to Old Trafford in the summer. His illustrious career at the club solidified his status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

While De Gea’s form had seen ups and downs in the latter stages of his United career, he managed to secure the Golden Gloves award last season and was named the club’s Player of the Year on four separate occasions.

However, the manner in which his United journey concluded left much to be desired. A peculiar contract dispute robbed him of the chance to bid a proper farewell to the fans who had supported him for over a decade.

According to reports from The Sun, a group of players at Manchester United are seething over Ten Hag’s treatment of De Gea.

They find it difficult to accept the decision to replace a Premier League-winning goalkeeper of De Gea’s stature with Andre Onana, a move that has done little to boost the Dutchman’s favor.

Ten Hag greenlit the £50 million acquisition of Onana, with whom he had previously worked at Ajax. However, the Cameroon international has endured a rocky start to his United career.

Onana’s struggles were glaring in a recent Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, where a costly mistake on his part allowed Leroy Sane to open the scoring in a 4-3 victory for the Bundesliga giants.

Reflecting on the defeat, Onana admitted, “This is the life of a goalkeeper. It’s difficult. We started very well, but after my mistake, we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, especially for me because I’m the one who let the team down. We were very good on the ball, they didn’t create any chances, but their first shot on target, I made a mistake. It was the turning point, and the team suffered because of that mistake. If we didn’t win today, it was because of me.”

The discontent among senior players regarding the handling of De Gea’s departure and the subsequent struggles of Onana on the pitch have added to the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

The manager faces a significant challenge in regaining the trust and confidence of both the players and the fans as he navigates the turbulent waters of Manchester United’s campaign.
