Liverpool Told They Signed Cody Gakpo Just To Spite United

Former Arsenal and England midfielder turned pundit Paul Merson doesn’t believe Liverpool should have signed Cody Gakpo.

The Netherlands star was confirmed as a new Liverpool signing shortly after Christmas. It is no secret that Gakpo was on Manchester United’s radar during the summer when Erik ten Hag opted to sign Antony instead.

The Red Devils needed a right-winger at the time, while Gakpo’s preferred position is on the left. Ten Hag’s priority right now should be a center-forward.

Until now, there was some doubt as to whether he would sign a versatile forward like Gakpo, but it sounds like a lot of fans are calling for a more traditional goalscorer.

Paul Merson has questioned the logic behind Liverpool signing Gakpo, though, which shows not everyone thinks it was a good signing.

“Liverpool are signing Cody Gakpo, but they should have signed some midfielders,” Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star.

“Will he even play? When everyone is fit I think he’ll be fifth choice for them in the forward areas.

“When they’re all fit, they have got [Mohamed] Salah, [Darwin] Nunez, Diaz, Jota, Firmino, and now Gakpo up front, but only three of them can play.

“It feels like a, ‘Stop Manchester United’, signing really. United were trying to get him too and this stops them from doing that.”

Man United’s summer pursuit of Gakpo is well-documented. It was also reported that the Dutchman was the Red Devils’ priority for the January window.

However, Liverpool intervened and sealed the deal a few days before the market opened.

Speaking of Gakpo being used as a fifth-choice player, everything obviously depends on him and Klopp but due to his versatility, there are several ways Cody could fit into the Reds’ XI.

Rather than worrying about how well Gakpo does at Liverpool, which would be similar to crying over spilled milk, United should focus on finding the right player to bang in goals next season and no later than that!
