IPOB threatens shutdown over alleged bias in Nnamdi Kanu’s trial

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Friday threatened to shut down the country over what it described as the biased handling of the trial of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal Government.

The group, which condemned the way some of Kanu’s lawyers were denied entry into the courtroom by personnel of the Department of State Services at the resumption of his trial on Wednesday, alleged that the judiciary was being used to keep Kanu in detention perpetually without trial.

IPOB’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, in a statement titled, ‘We will cripple Nigeria if the Federal Government thinks it can use Justice Binta Nyako to keep our leader in perpetual detention without trial’, said whether the Federal Government liked it or not, it remained committed to the actualisation of Biafra.

The statement partly read, “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra unequivocally condemn the attitude of Justice Binta Nyako over the way she is handling the case of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, before her court. We are most shocked at her obvious (alleged) prejudice and bias during the last court proceedings which resulted in her whimsical adjournment of the case to January 19 and 20, 2022.

“Justice Binta Nyako is engaging in judicial rascality and impunity at the behest of the Federal Government of Nigeria aimed at keeping our leader in perpetual detention without trial. This rascality only portrays that Binta Nyako is simply playing the script handed over to her by the Fulani caliphate of which she belongs to.

“We wish to express our displeasure with Justice Binta Nyako’s handling of this case. How can a defendant be on trial without legal representation? Justice Binta Nyako has always wanted to conduct a secret trial of this high-profile case which concerns the personal liberty and human rights of the accused.”

The group alleged that the long adjournments and what seemed like open bias and doing the bidding of the DSS had eroded the confidence of the accused in the neutrality of the judge handling the case.

According to Ejimakor: “UPDATE: Today, I had visitation with #Onyendu in the company of my colleague, Barr Ejiofor & his brother, Prince Emma Kanu. Our discussion centered primarily on the unfortunate episode in Court yesterday & the next course of action. Stay tuned for the details.

“DIALOGUE? Nobody can initiate any dialogue until Onyendu #Kanu is released. This must be the 1st step because it’s only MNK that has the vires to lead any dialogue. The release of Mandela from prison was the 1st step in the dialogue that led to ending apartheid in South Africa.”

Ejimakor’s comment is coming at a time the President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime hinted at the possibility of a political solution to Kanu’s issue.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, recently during an interview said a political solution on Kanu and Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho’s case had not been ruled out and could still happen.

He said the government was open to all kinds of considerations as part of efforts to resolve the crisis surrounding separatist agitations around the country.

Kanu’s next hearing in court comes up on 19 and 20 of January 2022.

IPOB Lawyers Prepare Legal Action Against Buhari Government Over Young Woman, Idara Gold Arrested For Wearing Biafran Outfit

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a counsel for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has said that legal action will be taken against the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly arresting a young woman, Idara Gold in Enugu on Monday.

Gold, a young self-proclaimed Biafra activist from Mbiafun Nkwono in Akwa Ibom State, dressed in an attire inspired by the Biafran flag to celebrate her birthday on October 18, 2021.

She was, however, taken away alongside four other persons by a joint task force of the Nigerian security agents troops on Monday.

When SaharaReporters contacted Ejiofor, he said the secret police denied arresting her, but he and his team were making efforts to get justice for the girl.

“We are on the matter, we have called the DSS in charge of the case. They denied having her in their custody. We are on it, we have made contact with somebody, one of the family members of the persons arrested. We are on it and preparing to take action against it,” Ejiofor said.

All attempts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Enugu State Command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe Ekea were futile as his mobile line could not be reached.

Similarly, Nigerian Army personnel had arrested a veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu early in October in Onitsha, Anambra State. When he was released, the DSS re-arrested him and flew him to its headquarters in Abuja.
