Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan is poised to reject a potential move to Arsenal following crucial discussions with Barcelona manager Xavi.

With Gundogan’s contract nearing its expiration, the midfielder is reportedly ready to bid farewell to his Premier League career as reported by Sport.

Arsenal aiming to revamp their central midfield have identified Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo as priority targets, but Gundogan has also emerged as a potential option.

Gundogan and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta previously worked together at Manchester City, with Arteta successfully luring players from his former club to North London last summer.

However, despite Arsenal’s interest, Gundogan is increasingly inclined to join Barcelona, who have offered him a three-year contract.

Speaking about Gundogan’s versatility and intelligence, Guardiola expressed his admiration for the midfielder’s ability to handle pressure and labeled him as “top, top class.”

Speaking last month, he said: ‘I remember one season when we won the second Premier League when Fernandinho was injured for a long time and he played as holding midfielder in games like against Burnley away with the long balls, second balls and… wow… he played. ‘I said I had the feeling that without him we couldn’t win the Premier League. He’s so intelligent Gundo, so clever and competitive. ‘Under pressure he handles it without a problem. He’s one of the best players I ever trained in my career in terms of the whole package. ‘He’s top, top class.’

The final decision regarding Gundogan’s future awaits, but his impact on City’s success this season has undoubtedly made him a valuable asset for the club and a sought-after player in the transfer market.
