Gabriel Jesus put in a stellar performance for Arsenal in their 4-1 win over Leeds United, scoring two goals and earning plaudits from fans and critics alike.

However, the Brazil international admitted to feeling “disappointed” after being taken off on the hour mark by manager Mikel Arteta.

Saturday’s game marked Jesus’s first Premier League start since November, as he had been recovering from a knee injury suffered at the World Cup.

In his absence, Eddie Nketiah and January recruit Leandro Trossard had filled the void, but Jesus proved his worth with a “devastating display” against Leeds.

Jesus’s goals came from a penalty in the first half and a close-range finish shortly before being subbed off.

With a hat-trick in sight, he was understandably unhappy about being taken off, but expressed his readiness to play a full 90 minutes ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Anfield next weekend.

The £45million summer signing from Manchester City has had a stop-start season due to injury, but his performance on Saturday showed glimpses of his full potential.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that he can stay fit and continue to produce such impressive displays as they look to climb the Premier League table.

As for Arteta, he will be pleased to have such a wealth of attacking options at his disposal, with the likes of Jesus, Nketiah, and Trossard all vying for playing time.

However, he will need to carefully manage their game time and balance the needs of the team with the desires of individual players.

‘Like every player you never disrespect the manager. The Mr, Mikel knows how I appreciate him a lot and how I respect him and the team as well,’ Jesus told Arsenal’s official website.

‘Obviously every player wants to play the full 90 minutes and I think I’m ready obviously to play more but when there referee came and said you’re going out I was a little bit disappointed because I want to play.

‘But of course I respect the mister and respect the other players as well. So it was just 60 minutes but I enjoy it a lot.’

Arteta, meanwhile, was thrilled to see his No.9 back on the scoresheet after his lengthy injury-enforced absence.

He said: ‘I’m delighted for him. They were all clapping for him and he’s been working so hard the last four or five months with a lot of support obviously from the team and the staff.

‘Today he deserved the chance to start and he grabbed the opportunity with a lot of conviction and scoring two very important goals.’
