Netherlands became the first country to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after they defeated the U.S. 3-1 in the round of 16.

After a slow start, Louis van Gaal‘s side showed their tournament pedigree with an assured display spearheaded by a top-tier performance from Denzel Dumfries.

The Inter wing-back contributed two assists and a goal of his own, most likely giving Antonee Robinson nightmares for weeks to come.

By the time the first half came to a close, even the USA’s own fans seemed to see the writing on the wall.

Ever gracious in victory, the Dutch supporters wasted no time in poking fun at their opposite numbers with some brutal comments on Twitter.

It seemed that the USA’s insistence on calling it ‘soccer’ made them more than a few enemies, with fans all around the globe seizing their chance to rejoice at the Stars and Stripes’ downfall.

The US might not have been able to bring their World Cup dreams to life in Qatar, but one thing is for certain: they certainly experienced a masterclass in good old-fashioned football fan tribalism.

Below are some reactions culled by infoexpert24 from Twitter:

@mk345773 Tweeted: Americans thought they were going to win the World Cup.

@mikejackstraw Tweeted: That was an embarrassing performance by the US. Australia is playing better than the US did.

@JuanDom09211418 Tweeted: Joe Biden touched the ball in a commercial from the WH before the game, which is why the USA lost the game. Joe Bad karma Biden. He ruined everything he touched. Family, the country, just everything.

@KarlreMarks Tweeted: First time the USA leaves a Middle Eastern country so quickly

@DanielSturridge Tweeted: That USA midfield is class. Have to give them big respect for how they played. I’m sure there will be a lot of clubs keeping tabs on em

@FloydShivambu Tweeted: It’s great that USA was defeated today: at least the President of Liberia will now go back to his country and stop failing his son who’s oddly playing for the USA! The
@FreedomLiberia must hold him to account for being AWOL.

@_ToddBeane Tweeted: If we are honest, that was a walk in the park for Holland. USA fans may say it was close. It was not close. Holland won a #WCUP knock out match in 1st gear. The Dutch will need much more next outing.

The 🇺🇸 bows out respectfully. Our young boys will be better in 2026.

This was the fifth time the U.S. had made it into the round of 16 at the World Cup. They’d only won once before — beating Mexico in 2002 to advance to the quarterfinals (the U.S. made it to the semifinals of the inaugural World Cup in 1930 when only 13 teams competed).

The United States will co-host the 2026 World Cup and defender Walker Zimmerman says their play this year moves the program forward and shows the potential. “This World Cup showed that attacking talent – showed that fight – a lot of American fans can look at and be proud of. The way that we played. The way that we went about our work. We’ll be back bigger than ever.”

The Netherlands will play the winner of the late Saturday match between Argentina and Australia in the quarterfinals on Friday.
