Chelsea Suffer Jude Bellingham Transfer Blow As Alternative Emerges - See Who
Chelsea target Jude Bellingham

Chelsea have been dealt a major blow in their transfer pursuit of Jude Bellingham with Premier League rivals Liverpool having made contact with Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues remain in the race to sign the talented 19-year-old but face serious competition from the Reds, Manchester City, and Real Madrid.

Dortmund slapped a £110million asking price on Bellingham over the summer transfer window and have refused to enter negotiations over his sale until next year.

The England international looks set to use a similar strategy to what Erling Haaland used when deciding his next club. A number of clubs are preparing for a huge bidding war with Bellingham’s contract set to expire in 2025.

Todd Boehly is said to have already put plans in place to give the Blues a jump on their rivals in the race to sign the super-talent, but Chelsea will need to pass in a number of key areas to sign Bellingham.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool considers the 19-year-old as their main target next summer, having already made contact with Borussia Dortmund.

Boehly will need to be able to convince the talented midfielder that Chelsea are a club on the rise, along with reassuring the 19-year-old that the club will be able to outperform the likes of Madrid, City and Liverpool across all competitions in the coming seasons. Pep Guardiola recently signed a new deal at City that will see him stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, which may persuade Bellingham to link up with his former Dortmund teammate Haaland.

Chelsea are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements with uncertainty hanging over the futures of both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. Bellingham is considered a generational talent by many and will be a huge signing for any club that is able to convince him to join them, leading their midfield for years to come.

In a situation where Bellingham deal don’t go through, Chelsea would then fall back to Christopher Nkunku who Chelsea will reportedly still complete their deal to sign next summer, despite the RB Leipzig forward suffering a knee injury which ruled him out of the World Cup.

The 25-year-old was initially called up to France’s squad for the tournament in Qatar but tore knee ligaments during the squad’s final training session before flying out to the World Cup.

Nkunku is expected to miss around eight weeks with the injury, ensuring that he could play no part in France’s defence of their World Cup crown, while he will also miss the resumption of the domestic season with Leipzig.

However, French outlet Le10 Sport reports that the injury will have no bearing on the winger’s expected move to Chelsea next year, with the player having already completed his medical ahead of the switch.

Confirmation of the deal has not been officially announced, but it is understood that the two parties have agreed personal terms and that Chelsea are willing to pay his £53m release clause.

There had previously been speculation that The Blues could look to move the transfer forward to January, but any deal is not expected to go through until July 1 at the earliest.

Nkunku has scored 12 goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances this season, helping Leipzig up to third place before the international break.

The France international’s form this term is a continuation of last season, when he scored 35 goals and created 20 more in 52 appearances across all competitions.

Chelsea, by contrast, have struggled this season, losing four of their five games immediately prior to the break, including each of their last three without scoring a goal.

Graham Potter’s side will resume their domestic campaign against Bournemouth on December 27, and will spend Christmas sitting eighth in the Premier League table.
