Chelsea forwards have the right to be angry; Kourt Zouma, Andreas Christiansen are mediocre

You might not have noticed, but Chelsea’s defence with a combination of Kourt Zouma and Andreas Christiansen is mediocre which is why i think that Chelsea forwards have a right to be angry with the outcome of their first five games.

Defensive chaos has characterised Lampards 14 months in charge of the Blues and things need to change. If you take a very good look at clubs statistics for the premier league this season after 5 matches, you’ll realize that only one club has scored more premier league goals than Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side and it is Everton. Below are the top 3 scorers right now:

But a look at the premier league table reveals an altogether different thing. The blues find themselves languishing in 6th position behind Everton(1st), Liverpool(2nd), Aston Villa(3rd), Leicester City(4th) and Arsenal(5th).

Chelsea Goal scoring without good backline

Despite scoring 13 goals already, the blues have recorded just 2 wins after five matches. They beat Brighton 3-1 on the first day of the season and defeated Crystal palace 4-0 on Match week 4.

They recorded a 2-0 loss to Liverpool before recording two 3-3 draws with Westbrom and Southampton.

A look at the goal table shows that the blues have largely been very efficient in attack. New signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have settled in impressively and are alongside Chelsea’s other forwards delivering.

But the blues have largely been underwhelming In defense – central defense to be specific. It has always been Chelsea’s problem position in the last few seasons and it still is.

Then there is also the goalkeeper’s position with Kepa looking a shadow of the player that was secured for a whooping £71m.

In the 3-1 opening day win over Brighton and Hove Albion, the blues were very impressive in attack but their defensive deficiencies were evident throughout the game.

In game No. 2, it was still their defense that let them down with the blues producing a spirited performance in the 2-0 loss despite playing most of the match with 10 men after Andreas Christiansen’s red card.

In game No. 3, all hell were let loose when they went 3-0 down to Westbrom within 20minutes courtesy of really shambolic defending. That the blues were able to turn it to a draws and almost a win is testament to my argument that they are very okay in attack.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, who was introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half, also managed to find the net

In Game No. 4, they coasted to a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace and temporarily forgot their defensive problems but that would not the for too long as they would meet with same problem again.

Come Game No. 5, their defensive issues would hunt them again. Inside 20minutes, the impressive Timo Werner already put them 2-0 up and from there.

It seemed like it will be a largely comfortable evening at Stamford Bridge but that did not prove to be the case. Come the early hours of the second half, Southampton were level.

The very Impressive Timo Werner stepped up again and assisted Havertz to put them ahead but it would still end in a draw as they scored again with the game ending in a 3-3 draw.

What next for Lampard’s backline?

Frank Lampard must be wondering what he has to do to fix the defensive conundrum that has been synonymous with the blues since he took over.

But one could argue that Chelsea do not have the right players to do that especially at centre back. The partnership of Kourt Zouma and Andreas Christiansen is mediocre at best.

Chelsea’s forwards must be sick of seeing that defense behind them Now and they must be angry that they have no security no matter how many they score.

What do you think has to be done to solve Chelsea’s defensive problems?
