Arsenal, Chelsea, Barca, Others React As Over 170 People Die In Indonesia Stadium Riot

Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, and other football clubs around the world are mourning following events that took place at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia where people were killed.

Infoexpert24 reports that at least 174 people have been killed in a riot at a football match in Indonesia, most of whom were trampled to death after police fired tear gas, in one of the world’s worst sporting disasters.

In the East Java Province of Indonesia a riot broke out after supporters of the Javanese clubs Arema and Persebaya Surabaya clashed

The clash took place after Arema was defeated 3-2 by Surabaya in Malang Regency, East Java on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

After two defeats at home in the Indonesian national championship, Arema fans flooded the field creating a chaotic scene.

Angry at their team’s first home defeat by the rival club in 23 years, thousands of Arema supporters invaded the pitch and threw bottles and other missiles at players and football officials.

Some people were suffocated and others were trampled as hundreds ran to the exit in a bid to escape the chemical.

Clashes spread outside the stadium where at least five police vehicles were overturned and set on fire.

Following the tragic incident, several Premier League clubs and other clubs around the world have also taken to social media to give their condolences to the country of Indonesia. See them below:

Arsenal wrote: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the events in Malang at the Kanjuruhan Stadium Indonesia today. Along with everyone who finds a connection through football, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy”.

Chelsea wrote: ”All of us at Chelsea Football Club are deeply saddened by the events at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy”.

Manchester United wrote:  “Manchester United is deeply saddened by the tragedy in Malang, Indonesia. We send our sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and everyone affected”.

Barcelona wrote:  “FC Barcelona is pained by the tragic events at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia and rejects all acts of violence both on and off the field. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims”.

PSG wrote: “Paris Saint-Germain would like to offer its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the stadium tragedy in Malang, Indonesia”.

Liverpool wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the events at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, Indonesia. The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with all those affected at this time”.

Bayern Munich wrote: “FC Bayern is deeply saddened by the tragedy at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia and rejects all acts of violence. Our heartfelt thoughts are with all those affected”.

Tottenham Hotspur wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the events at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia. The thoughts of everyone at Tottenham Hotspur are with all those affected”.

Following the massive amount of lives lost because of a football game FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a statement.

The statement by Infantino said, “The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic incidents that have taken place in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.

“This is a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident.

“Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have been injured, together with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association, and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time.”
