Tottenham Hotspur Appoint Nuno Espirito Santo As New Manager
Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

Tottenham held face-to-face talks with Nuno on Wednesday to finalise the move, having already agreed a deal in principle with the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss.

Nuno’s appointment concludes a protracted search for Jose Mourinho’s successor after his dismissal in April. Spurs have held talks with Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Hansi Flick, Paulo Fonseca, Gennaro Gattuso and Julen Lopetegui since the end of the Premier League season.

Nuno, 47, left Wolves at the end of last season by mutual agreement.

What has been said?

Nuno told the Tottenham club website: “When you have a squad with quality and talent, we want to make the fans proud and enjoy. It’s an enormous pleasure and honour (to be here), there’s joy and I’m happy and looking forward to starting work.

“We don’t have any days to lose and we must start working immediately as pre-season starts in a few days.”

Speaking on the appointment, chairman Daniel Levy said: “First of all, I’d like to welcome Nuno to the Club.

“We should like to thank our supporters for all their patience throughout this process.

“I’ve spoken already about the need to revert back to our core DNA of playing attacking, entertaining football and Fabio and I believe Nuno is the man who can take our talented group of players, embrace our young players coming through and build something special.”

Who else was considered?

Tottenham held discussions with a number of potential managers after sacking Mourinho. The club were in talks with Conte, Pochettino and Flick.

Spurs were also close to hiring Fonseca, only for talks to collapse at a late stage due to their interest in Gattuso. But Spurs then u-turned once again after their supporters made their opposition to the Italian known.

What did Nuno achieve at Wolves?

The 47-year-old Portuguese, who took charge of Wolves in 2017, won the Championship title in his first season. He then finished seventh with Wolves in consecutive campaigns in the Premier League.

Last season, however, was more disappointing as Wolves struggled with injuries and consistency — finishing 13th in Nuno’s fourth and final year at the club.
