Drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day is very important in order for the body to stay hydrated.

In Nigeria, people are prone to drinking very chilled water because of the weather. After long hours in the sun, people usually take cold water to quench their thirst and remove exhaustion.

However, what most people don’t know is that drinking chilled water can do more harm than good.

Reduces The Heart Rate

Do you know that intake of very chilled water decreases the heart rate?. Yes! studies have shown that drinking cold water not only decreases the heart rate but also stimulates the vagus nerve which is the nerve that controls the involuntary functions of the body.

Remember that nerve is also an integral part of the nervous system. Once the vagus nerve is affected by the low temperature of the chilled water, the heart rate eventually slows down.

2. Chilled Water Shocks Your Body

It is important and advisable not to drink chilled water after a strenuous workout. should be strictly avoided. However, it is advisable to drink warm water after work out because the body generates a lot of heat when you work out.

When you drink chilled water after work out, there is a temperature mismatch that takes a toll on your digestive health. It may lead to severe stomach pain as very cold water shocks the body.

3. Cold Water Affects Digestion

One of the major reasons people should avoid drinking chilled water is because it has serious implications for digestion. It has a way of contracting the blood vessels and also restricts digestion.

Taking chilled water hinders the process of absorbing nutrients during digestion because the body’s focus is diverted from digestion to regulating the body temperature and the chilled water.

4. It Affects Fat Breakdown

Taking cold water immediately after a meal will interfere with your body’s ability to break down fats.

This happens because the water temperature hardens fats from the foods and as a result, it becomes difficult for your body to break down the unwanted fats.

It is very good to drink room temperature water because it helps with the digestive process in the body, however, drinking chilled water can lead to constipation.

When you drink chilled water, the food hardens when passing through the body and it makes the intestines contract which is one of the major causes of constipation.

All the implications above do not mean that you stop drinking water as it will cause more harm than good.

Endeavor to drink room temperature water to avoid the problems mentioned above and it is equally important to pay special attention to the quality of water you are drinking.
