Why Mason Mount Must Sign New Chelsea Deal Amid Liverpool Links – Steven Gerrard

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has outlined why Todd Boehly needs to tie Mount down to a new long-term deal at Stamford Bridge.

Gerrard knows a thing or two about having his head swayed by rival opposition in the Premier League with interest from Liverpool and Juventus increasing as Mount contract situation drags on.

Infoexpert24 recalls how former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho made several attempts in 2004 to lure  Steven Gerrard to Stamford Bridge from his boyhood club, but the Reds captain eventually decided to stay at Anfield weeks after lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2005.

Mason Mount may find himself in a similar position to Gerrard, with the England international’s contract running down at Stamford Bridge with reports suggesting Liverpool are keen on signing the 23-year-old.

The Blues midfielder has been a consistently key performer under different managers since breaking into the senior team at Chelsea. One of the key factors affecting negotiations between Mount and the club over a new contract is the length of the new deal being offered.

Talks between the two parties have now paused until after the World Cup, with Mount featuring in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad in Qatar.

Chelsea remains confident the English midfielder will sign a new deal after both the player and club came away from the latest round of negotiations feeling positive that an agreement can be met, but clubs are enquiring as to whether the England international could be lured away in the future.

The Reds legend admitted: “I’m a massive fan of Mason.

“I’ve watched his [Mount] progress – of course I have. He’s a big talent for the country.

“He plays with a smile on his face. He can create, he can score, and he’s already a European Cup winner, so I don’t think he needs the likes of myself to big him up or praise him. But I must say I’m a fan.”

Mount enjoyed his best season at his boyhood club last term, registering 10 goals and 11 assists in 32 matches to help the Blues qualify for Champions League football.

The Chelsea star struggled to replicate his brilliant form at the start of the 2022/23 campaign but has shown signs under Graham Potter that he is back to his best, despite the Blues languishing down in eighth place in the Premier League table heading into the World Cup break.
