WAEC postpones release of 2020 WAEC result, announces new date

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has given an update on releasing the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result (2020 WAEC result) for the year 2020 today, October 28.

Recall that WASSCE 2020 ended on Saturday, 12th September after it was initially postponed from April to August due to the global coronavirus infection that forced the government to shut down schools.

In September, WAEC said it plans to release the results of the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) within 45 days after the exam has ended.

The Council had said that a total of 1,459,463 Nigerian students sat for the exam in a total of 76 subjects from which each of them sat for eight or a maximum of nine subjects that must include English language and Mathematics.

Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu , the head of public affairs of WAEC Nigeria, had said during an interview with newsmen in September that despite the forced postponement as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the examination body does not plan to deviate from its practice of releasing results of candidates within 45 days.

“So, certainly, we will still work towards achieving this 45 days time lag target,” he noted.

On Friday, reports emerged, suggesting that WAEC has released 2020 WAEC result. The report had informed “all the candidates that participated in the 2020 West African Examinations Council May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) that they can now check their results online.”

However, a fact check by Infoexpert24 shows that the report on WAEC releasing the 2020  result is false as the council released a statement on its official Twitter account debunking the rumour.

WAEC Nigeria tweeted: “This is fake news. Please, disregard,” the statement on Friday evening added.
