Mikel Arteta Makes Claims About Arsenal Winning The Premier League

Gunners coach, Mikel Arteta has made claims that ‘it’s about time’ Arsenal won the Premier League again after beating Chelsea on Sunday at Stamfoed Bridge leaving them top the Premier League table.

Success in football is said to occur in cycles. Liverpool dominated the 1980s but has not ruled for the past three decades.

Sir Alex Ferguson led United to victory in the 1990s and beyond, but the club is on the verge of a decade in the wilderness.

It has been 18 years and counting for Arsenal. Since Arsenal’s last title, Manchester City has won the Premier League six times.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have five victories. Liverpool ended a 30-year championship drought. Even Leicester City once triumphed.

Since that incredible Invincibles season under Arsene Wenger in 2004, Arsenal have finished second only twice in 18 years.

Even so, they finished 12 points behind Chelsea in 2004-05 and 10 points behind Leicester in 2015-16, seasons in which they were neither of the two leading contenders for the title until Tottenham’s collapse.

And yet, there is a sense within the club that their time is finally returning. Nearly three years under Mikel Arteta, a process was trusted, teething problems were endured, significant funds were expended, and benefits were realized.

Before today’s trip to Stamford Bridge, Arsenal had accumulated 31 points in their first 12 games.

Arsenal is one of only 10 teams in Premier League history to have accumulated more points at this point. Eight of the remaining nine have won the title. Only Newcastle under Kevin Keegan fell short.

And Arteta would be thrilled if Arsenal were successful. Ultimately, this has been a long time coming.

“It is about time,” said Arteta.

“It’s been so long. We have to earn the time to be there. We have done that so far but there is still a long, long season ahead of us.”

And there is still the ominous presence of Manchester City to contend with, but that is a beast for another day.

If they win their final game before the World Cup, Arteta’s squad will be in first place at Christmas, with their only league loss coming in September against Manchester United.
