Mesut Ozil Hits Out At Media Over Constant ‘Attacks’ On Cristiano Ronaldo

Mesut Ozil has come out in defence of Cristiano Ronaldo, criticizing the ‘constant negativity about the Portuguese star in the media.

The former Arsenal star also hit out at ‘pundits who don’t have a career anymore’ and accuses Ronaldo’s critics of using his name to ‘get attention’.

Mesut Ozil and Ronaldo were teammates at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, successfully winning one La Liga title before the German’s departure from the club as he moved to Arsenal.

The pair were known to have a good relationship on and off the pitch, and now Ozil has shown his support for Ronaldo in a series of tweets.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the most influential sports personality in the world and rightly, so he gets the most criticism from the media and fans especially on social media.

He has been under a different and heightened level of media scrutiny since his interview with Piers Morgan which led to Manchester United terminating his contract.

Ozil has criticized the media’s coverage surrounding Ronaldo and even took aim at former players who negatively speak about the former Manchester United player.

Ozil said: “I really don’t get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from…

“The media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don’t have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad.

“He is soon 38 years old – so what’s the surprise that he doesn’t score 50 goals a season anymore?

“Every football fan out there should be happy to have seen him playing world class football for 20 years.

“I don’t think anyone from the new generation will be able to match his numbers again. He will forever be in his own category.

“Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes in sports history.”

Ronaldo’s name has been a major talking point once again this week after he was dropped by Portugal manager Fernando Santos for their World Cup last-16 clash against Switzerland.

The 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos started in place of the icon and scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory, as Ronaldo made a late cameo off the bench.

That personal blow came just a week after the legendary forward saw his contract terminated by Manchester United following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, which led to a wave of criticism over his behaviour from former teammates and pundits alike.
