Blow For Chelsea As Star Player Rejects Massive Contract Worth £200,000 A Week

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has left the club in a tough position after he reportedly rejected Blues offer of a new contract worth £200,000 per week.

Since the takeover of Chelsea was completed at the end of May, the club’s new owners have been proactive with regards to dealing with matters with the first-team squad.

As well as going on a spending spree during the summer transfer window, Todd Boehly has been involved in trying to negotiate fresh terms with a number of the club’s stars and prospects.

Mount has been one of the most consistent Chelsea player over the last three years, as he has somehow managed to retain his position as an integral player under three different managers; Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

The 23-year-old is currently playing at the World Cup in Qatar, and contract talks with Chelsea have been put on hold, for now. Talks are expected to continue after the global spectacle, although they might not go as smoothly because of Mount’s wage demands.

According to Daily Mail, Mount was offered a massive £200,000 deal, which he initially turned down. The thinking behind it is Mount and his team want to bid their time, and negotiate after the World Cup in what is a calculated risk.

It is Mount’s hope that an impressive World Cup for him would likely increase his market value and subsequently his negotiating power at Chelsea ahead of contract negotiations at Stamford Bridge

Reports further claim Mount ideally wants his wages to match that of his England teammate Raheem Sterling, who is currently on a £300,000-a-week wage. Mount has featured in two of England’s opening games, against Iran and USA. In the first game, he was thoroughly impressive as the Three Lions cruised to an emphatic 6-2 victory.

Further reports claim Chelsea’s contract offers to the 23-year-old have been considerably low compared to other stars in the team.

Reece James, for example, recently agreed on a new six-year deal worth £250,000 a week, but negotiations with Mount have been far tamer.
