ASUU Agrees To Call Off Strike, Gives Reasons

ASUU has finally agreed to call off ASUU strike.

Infoexpert24 reports that after series of meetings with the Federal Government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has agreed to call of its eight-month strike which has grounded academic activities in the public universities in Nigeria.

The leadership of ASUU reached the consensus during a meeting with the federal government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, on Friday, November 27 in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

ASUU Strike and FG’s decision

The President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government also pledged to increase the total payment to ASUU to N70 billion.

ASUU confirmed this in a statement on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, saying: “The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has agreed to call off its eight-month-old strike after the Federal Government offered to pay the lecturers N70 billion.

“The decision followed a meeting with the government team led by Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, in Abuja, on Friday.

“The FG further agreed to settle the arrears of salaries of the lecturers before December 31.

“ASUU is expected to report the agreement to its organs and then communicate their decision to the government after which a date for the calling off of the strike would be announced,” the statement noted.
