6 Manchester United Players Who Break The ‘Ronaldo Rule’

Manchester United will reportedly introduce a salary cap of £200,000 per week in a bid to keep dressing room harmony – but which players go above the threshold already?

The Red Devils are set to implement the ‘Ronaldo rule’ after the club mutually terminated the contract of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was on £480,000-a-week before his well-publicized exit.

According to Mail, the club’s chief executive Richard Arnold, football director John Murtough, and manager Erik ten Hag, have decided to draw back on the wage expenditure and alleviate any jealousy among the squad.

Here are the six players at Man Utd who are currently paid more than the £200,000 per week sum.

1 . David De Gea – £375,000

At the top of the list is David De Gea, whose contract is up at Old Trafford in the summer of 2023.

If the keeper was to sign a fresh deal at the club, he would have to take a significant pay cut. Negotiations are still underway between the player and club.

2 . Jadon Sancho – £350,000

The elusive Jadon Sancho is Man Utd’s highest-paid outfield player. The winger has underwhelmed since arriving from Borussia Dortmund and things have gone from bad to worse.

Ten Hag sent Sancho out on a specialist fitness regime in the Netherlands in a bid to bring him back to his Bundesliga days.

3 . Raphael Varane – £340,000

Raphael Varane has shown in bursts what he is capable of but the inability to remain consistently fit is a concern.

Currently sitting £140,000 above the wage threshold, Varane would have to take a considerable wage reduction if he was to renew.

4 . Casemiro – £300,000

Casemiro has been a tremendous buy for Man Utd, giving them the gusto and mental fortitude they have been needing for years. He’s pitched in with some important goals as well as giving the midfield a bit of a backbone,

At 30 years old and on a contract that runs until June 2026, the Brazilian will surely have no qualms about taking a reduction at that point.

5 . Anthony Martial – £250,000

Anthony Martial was sent out on loan to Sevilla last season, but he’s come back into the fold and looked fresh under Ten Hag.

Of course, Man Utd won’t be paying that Ballon d’Or clause anytime soon but at least the Frenchman has provided something a bit different this time around.

6 . Bruno Fernandes -£240,000

Bruno Fernandes signed a contract with the club last April, extending his deal to 2026. He will not have to worry about any cut in pay for a number of years yet.

Though he cuts a frustrated figure at times, the Portuguese playmaker is one of the first names on the team sheet and is one of the few who Man Utd will happily pay the wage for.
